Following last night’s season opening win, the Newport Beach Riptide were unable to replicate their success in game two, as they fell short 7-2 in a rematch with the SoCal Catch.

Justin Seiwald surrendered four runs in the first inning, three coming on a bases loaded double by the Catch’s Case Smith. After working through early control issues, Seiwald settled down to throw three consecutive scoreless innings, striking out four, before leaving before the fifth trailing 4-0.

At the plate, the blue and orange struggled to get much going, as they only managed two runs on six hits, all by different batters. With right fielder Tim Hergert as the only familiar face from last night’s lineup, the fresh lineup largely stymied by Catch starting pitcher Nicholas Cumpston, who threw four scoreless innings.

After missing yesterday’s contest due to other commitments, left fielder Brandon Munoz and center fielder Andris Rizquez each made their debut. Munoz, batting out of the leadoff spot, pushed across the only two runs of the day for the ‘Tide with a rocket of a double down the left field line in the fifth inning.

With the rubber match of the three game series set for tomorrow at Vanguard University, the Riptide will look to rebound with a win in their home opener and take the series from the Catch.

First pitch is at 5pm, join us in person or for live audio on our Mixlr page.
